Overview

Over the past six years, the Culture Department of La Pobla d’Montornès Town Hall has organized an annual public contest to select the official poster for its Festa Major, evaluated through popular vote by local residents. Driven by a commitment to local culture and community engagement, Kore Studio participated in three consecutive editions from 2023 to 2025. This project series captures the evolution of an ongoing creative journey, starting with the contest-winning design in 2023 and expanding into an illustrative exploration of local folklore, traditions, and festival identity.

The Challenge

Designing for a municipality’s main festival requires balancing tradition, local pride, and vibrant visual appeal while connecting with a broad, multigenerational audience. The primary challenge was to continually reinvent the visual concept across three consecutive years without losing the core festive identity. Each poster needed to showcase different cultural icons—from popular mythical beasts (La Pigota and El Gall) to lesser-known characters (Els Cap Grossos)—while maintaining visual harmony, high readability, and a warm, inviting atmosphere suitable for official communication.

Our Approach

We adopted an illustrative, hand-crafted digital methodology tailored to each edition's theme:
     - 2023 (Winning Design): Focused on the municipality's iconic symbols (La Pigota, El Gall, and the bell tower). We crafted a digital collage from photo references, adjusting color palettes—vibrant greens, garnets, purples, and soft browns—and selecting a warm yellow background inspired by the town's official flag alongside handwritten typography to express authenticity.

     - 2024: Shifted the spotlight to local youth tradition by featuring Els Cap Grossos from La Festa Major Petita. Following on-site photo research at El Casal, we created detailed digital drawings of each character's face and traditional attire, using rounded 3D typography and inclined layouts to reflect a playful, energetic spirit.

     - 2025: Conceptualized a complete festive scene incorporating La Pigota, El Gall, a Cap Gros, a Grallera, Diable del Gall, and La Garrofina against the town hall silhouette. We implemented a high-contrast dark backdrop with white character outlines and hand-drawn colorful lettering to evoke the excitement of the annual balcony lottery.

- Official Selection & Contest Winner: The 2023 poster design was awarded 1st place by popular vote, serving as the official visual identity across all municipality communications for the Festa Major.

- Cultural Representation: Successfully preserved and elevated traditional elements of local folklore through a modern, cohesive digital illustration style.

- Continuous Brand Engagement: Created a recognizable, 3-year visual trilogy that strengthened the community's emotional connection with their local cultural heritage.
